Barbie Malibu Dream House

By Elma B.

Jonathan Adler, a renowned interior designer, adorned the Malibu Dream House. Mattel, the toymaker, asked Adler to design the interior to celebrate Barbie’s 50th birthday. The house is 3,500 square feet and overlooks the Pacific Ocean. In the garage, one can find a Malibu Barbie Pink Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. There is an in-house museum that displays vintage Barbie dolls, and an original Andy Warhol portrait of Barbie in the living room. For more details of the fantasy home,  see the photos below.

When in Belgium...

By Elma B.

I moved to Brussels in August of 2011. I lived there shortly but had the chance to become quickly acquainted with this boutique northeastern European city. Brussels is mostly known for hosting the European Parliament, the European Commission and the NATO.  Therefore, as I walked through Brussels, I could hear so many different European languages and see a large variety of Europeans. Brussels is also unique because it has two official languages: French and Flemish (a dialetct of Dutch).

While Brussels is not a party city, I enjoyed it for its international vibe and amazing chocolates.  My favorite area was the Sablon, especially for brunch and strolls on Sundays. For more details of my life in Brussels, please see the photos below.

Fall Style Green

By Amra B.

Green is my go-to-color every season; I feel that it is particularly well-suited for the fall. I enjoy everything green, including purses, dresses, shoes, and even make-up. I think this color complements well both brown and black; green is easy to incorporate into your winter palette.

Below are some of the photos on how to include green in your everyday look.

My Trip Around the World

By Elma B.

Below I have included some photographs I wanted to share from my Summer of 2011. It was a special time for me because I had just graduated from law school and had taken the bar exam.

I was in Miami, which is a gorgeous city both for its beaches, weather, its gorgeous tropical landscape and trendy nightlife. My next stop was Greece. I spent most of my time there in Mykonos, which is a gem in the Mediterranean both for its incredible landscape, out of this world Greek food, and sandy beaches. My summer’s final stop was in the Canary Islands. I spent most of my time there in Las Palmas, which was very exotic with its sand dunes and the fact that I could see the Saharan desert in Africa with my naked eye across the shore. Below, you will find photos of some of my favorite moments from that summer.

The Young Bianca Jagger

By Elma B.

In addition to being astoundingly beautiful and stylish, Bianca Jagger has dedicated her life to human rights causes. In fact, she has founded her own chartable foundation called Bianca Jagger Human Rights Foundation. Bianca has won notable human rights awards for her charitable work and advocacy.

Bianca Jagger was born in Nicaragua and was raised by a single hard working mother. While young, Bianca moved to Paris to study political science at a French university. She met Mick Jagger in France and married him in St. Tropez. They have one gorgeous daughter: Jade Jagger.

Bianca was also a good friend of Andy Warhol and was heavily associated with Studio 54 of New York City. In 1970s and early 1980s, she had a reputation for her jet-setting ways. She was a model and has appeared on many notable TV shows.  Her style as a young woman was out of this world. She managed to have a sexy yet a classy-timeless look; no wonder Andy Warhol thought the world of her. We love you Bianca for your beauty, style and most notably an amazing heart!!!

Fall/Winter Hats for Fashionistas

By Elma B.

Now that the fall is here and the winter is fast approaching, I wanted to share with you some photos of remarkable collection of hats: from boho to classy. When I watch Gossip Girl, I noticed that Blair Waldorf has an amazing selection of hats that she coordinates with her outfits. Thus, I decided to include many of her hat moments from Gossip Girl. Also, I included many memorable hats spotted on street-style photos.

Often a hat can be your fashion piece statement and that hat (most of the time) can also keep you warm as well. Take a look, and maybe you will come up with your own hat collection for this fall and winter!

Coco Before Chanel

By Elma B.

This movie is about Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel before she became a fashion household name. The movie begins by detailing Gabrielle as an orphan and essentially a seamstress and a singer. For sake of not spoiling the movie for you, I will that Gabrielle (by then nicknamed Coco) enters the fashion world as a hat designer and essentially builds her own luxury fashion brand. Part of the movie takes place in a beautiful chateau in the French countryside; the movie is a must see for fashionistas!

The movie was well received internationally and was essentially nominated, among others, for six César Awards and for the Academy Award for Best Costume Design. Audrey Tautou (we all remember her from Amélie) plays Coco. She does an incredible job by moving us with her hardships, her sorrow, her happiness and her ultimate business success. For details of this incredible movie, please see the photos below.

Rachel Bilson Style

By Elma B.

Rachel Bilson became well known through her character on the O.C. The public (and essentially Karl Lagerfeld) took notice of her chic and laid back sense of style. She paired-up with DKNY to launch her own clothing line Edie Rose; the pieces are affordable (under $100) and are distinctly in black, white and a hint of yellow. She also collaborated with Karl Lagerfeld to produce a Magnum ice cream commercial.

Recently, she has her own show called the Hart of Dixie; it’s a comical and a romantic drama that takes place in the South. Her sense of style strongly stands out in the show (she plays a doctor, from NYC, who has moved to a small Southern town). For details of many of her some of many of her stylish moments, please see the photos below.

Conquering the World in Six Inch Heels

By Amra B.

Me in My New Loubutins
I am a big fan of very very high heels. Although I am already pretty tall, I believe that there is no such thing as a high heel that is too high. I love how high heels can change my mood instantly; I slip a pair on to go to school, to work, to shop, to go out and to feel “oh so fabulous." I even wear them around the house sometimes when I want to feel extra pretty.

Catherine Deneuve Young

By Elma B.

She captivated the audience in with her roles as a distant and mysterious beauty in Repulsion and Belle de Jour in the 1960s.  Since then her acting career took-off, and she has starred in many well-known French and American movies and has won and been nominated for international movie awards. Her two other most famous movies are Indochine and the Last Metro in the 1980s and 1990s respectively. Catherine Deneuve has tried to guard her privacy. She has been the object of admiration by famous actors (e.g. Clint Eastwood), photographers, business tycoons (e.g. Pierre Lescure) and directors. For details, please see the photos below.

Hamptons NY

By Elma B.

The Hamptons are located only a fairly short drive (of course depending on the traffic) from New York City and east of Long Island. Montauk (named after the Native Americans who were its inhabitants) and Sag Harbor are also commonly referred as the “Hamptons.” To the north of East Hamptons is the Gardiners Island, which is the largest privately owned island in the U.S. acquired by an English colonist. The high season lasts from May until September. October to January is the off-peak season.

The town is famous for its luxurious villas and its famous/influential/mega-wealthy guests and residents. Many TV shows like Gossip Girl and Revenge are filmed at the Hamptons; the place is associated with exclusivity and high society in the United States. For details, please see the photos below.

Selma Starfinger

By Amra B.

I met this striking woman some years ago in Sarajevo and quickly learned that she is one of the most talented designers from ex-Yugoslavia. Selma’s style is simply unique because she combines rough edgy constructs with extremely feminine fabrics and does this in the most tasteful and effortless way.

One of the most unique aspects of Selma’s style is that each piece is timeless: her materials and designs have an edge because her designs and materials are not overpowered by current trends; she maintains her independence. I could see myself wearing her spectacular leather jacket today and having it be an equally important piece of my wardrobe ten years from now. Celebrities have already taken notice of this incredibly talented designer and her clothes have been seen on Rihanna, Omahyra Mota, and Coco Rocha (to name a few).

I am super excited to present Selma’s latest collection (http://www.etsy.com/shop/SelmaStarfinger), as well as her other pieces from her lookbook (featured below):

80s Icons

By Elma B.

The 80s style was characterized by sharp edges (e.g., severe shoulder pads), bright neon colors (e.g., the gold, silver and neon pink spandex), huge hair (i.e., a lot of teasing and hairspray), tight pants (e.g., high waist skinny pants), and extra large tops (e.g., huge blazers and off the shoulder t-shirts). Some 80s icons that left an everlasting etch in fashion include Boy George, Guns N Roses, Michael Jackson, Janet Jackson, Kim Basinger in Batman and Madonna.

Of course there were those movies that we can keep watching over and over like Flashdance, The Breakfast Club, Rocky, The Terminator, and Weird Science. What about Christy Brinkley? For more details of the stylish 80s moments, check out the photos below!

Autumn in New York

By Amra B.

Autumn may be one of the best times to visit New York City. The weather is perfect for long strolls in the Central Park; there seem to be fewer tourists; and being in the city makes me feel like I am living my own version of the movie  “Autumn in New York." There is something impossibly romantic about the city during this time, and I cannot resist but to fall in love with New York City or with a special person there.

I hope you can write your own love story of “Autumn in New York." If not, there is always a chance you will fall in love with the city itself.  My tip is to visit the Plaza Food Hall below the Plaza Hotel for gourmet chocolates and hot chocolate, and then take a stroll through the Central Park.

NAOMI CLARK: She's Got the Look

By Aless G.

I love Naomi Clark (Anna Lynn McCord). She is definitely my favorite character in the series Beverly Hills 90210; I love her acting and style. She always has a cool look yet she is sophisticated. She plays a rich and popular Barbie; her character is snobbish and a typical California blonde.

Timeless Pieces: The Hermes Scarf

By Elma B.

The first time I really took notice of the silk Hermes scarves was at a villa, which used to be the Russian embassy, in Brussels. My firm was hosting its ten-year anniversary party, and upstairs there was a showcase of head manikins, which were wearing gorgeous scarves. My friend Chloe pointed out the exhibition in which each of the manikins was wearing a Hermes silk scarf in a different way, e.g. one as a headband, the other was tied around the neck, etc. Chloe said that from then on I would always recognize a Hermes silk scarf.

Since that moment, I have been in love with the Hermes silk scarves. Their designs are beautiful and the quality superb. Public figures like Princess Grace Kelley and Jackie Kennedy Onassis have been photographed wearing them. Many celebrities have been spotted wearing the scarves.

See our previous post on the several different ways in which you can wear a scarf. For various Hermes scarfs, please see the photos below.

MONICA BELLUCCI IN MALENA

By Aless Gibaja

Malena is one of my favorite Italian movies that is directed by Giuseppe Tornatore. Monica Bellucci plays Malena Scordia, who is the most beautiful woman in a village in Sicily called Castelcuto. The village men make a legend out of Malena and an icon of erotic beauty. For the village’s women, she is the center of envy and criticism. I love Monica Bellucci in Malena and her Southern Italian style in the 40s (during the second war world). Dolce and Gabbana still use this Sicilian lifestyle in their collections. You can see in one of our last posts in the campaign 2012-2013:

http://www.clubfashionista.com/2012/10/southern-italian-clothing-style-dolce.html

I LOVE MALENA’S STYLE!!!

By Elma B.

The Costume Institute Ball, also known as the Met Ball or the Met Gala, takes place annually and celebrates the opening of the Costume Institute, which is like a miniature museum within the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Costume Institute features fashion exhibits. The Met Ball is a red carpet event, where the biggest names in the fashion industry along with many Oscar winners attend and wear some of the most intricate gowns. The event is hosted by Vogue and another fashion industry member and has been taking place since 1948.

Anna Wintour oversees the guest list of the Met Ball. A ticket, which is hard to come by, was speculated to be up to $25,000 at the last Met Ball in May of 2012. The tables ranged from $75,000-$250,000 for corporations depending on the size of the corporation and its relationship with Vogue. The Met Ball is one of the biggest fundraising nights in New York City. For more details of the Met Ball, see some of the Ball's most memorable gowns below.

Anna Wintour Vogue Editor

By Elma B.

She was born in London, and had worked British magazines until 1988 when she became the editor-in-chief of the US Vogue. Wintour has a major influence regarding what goes on the pages of Vogue as well as on the fashion industry in general. Her signature style is the blond bob cut with bangs along with (often worn) dark sunglasses.

She does not appear to be a warm and friendly person. "People respond well to people who are sure of what they want," Wintour told 60 Minutes in May 2009.The documentary, called The September Issues, focused on Wintour; it was well-received and was watched by audiences worldwide.

Wintour is married to a South-African psychiatrist, David Shaffer.  Wintour has revitalized the Vogue magazine and made it well known for its humongous September issue.  Wintour can often be spotted at the most prominent fashion shows/fashion weeks in the front rows. Below I have included photos of the young Wintour and of her in action at Vogue and with numerous celebrities.

Gisele Bundchen Body

By Amra B.

One of my favorite top models, Gisele Bundchen, is also very fond of a healthy diet and a daily fitness regime.  In her interview for Vogue UK, Giselle says that her fondness of healthy food has made her son think that broccoli is dessert. On her amazing body, Giselle says “Yeah well. Like I tell my five sisters, who don’t work at it very hard at all, whatever you put in, you get out. I am not afraid of working hard at anything, whatever it is. I just always want to be the best that I can.”

St. Barts: Caribbean Paradise

By Elma B.

Saint Barthélemy, commonly known as St. Barts, is a territory of France and is a part of the French West Indies in the Caribbean (please see the map below). St. Barts’s capital is Gustavia. St. Barts is a volcanic island that is encircled by reefs. The island is hilly and has glaring white sand.

During Christmas and New Years, the mega wealthy and celebrities vacation on St. Barts. The Russian business tycoon, Roman Abramovich, had a huge New Years Eve party in December, 2011 (see the fire works photo below for details). Please see the photos below for many of the famous faces caught by the paparazzi in St. Barts.

The climate is tropical and does not vary throughout the year; there are only two seasons: dry and humid. St. Barts is known as the “Cannes” of the island world because of its deluxe accommodations (private villas and resorts) and the wealthy visitors it attracts. Scuba diving (among the best in the Caribbean), hiking (that can lead you to beaches only accessible by foot) and horseback riding on the beach are popular activities for the tourists.

Singapore Style

By Elma B.

Singapore is an Asian city-state that consists of 63 islands.  Its neighbors include Malaysia and Indonesia.  The population of Singapore consists of the Chinese (majority), Malays (minority) and Indians (minority). Singapore is a former British colony.  Since its separation from Malaysia in the mid 1960s, Singapore has been prospering and is one of the Four Asian Tigers.

Singapore is the world’s fourth leading financial center; its port is one of the top five busiest ports in the world.  With its amassed wealth and a booming economy, Singapore has had many of the fashion powerhouses flock to the city-state and open their doors to the Singaporean consumers.  If looking for designer clothing, look no further than one of Singapore’s largest luxury shopping malls: Marina Bay Sands. For cool urban style of everyday young and chic people, look no further than the very streets of Singapore. For details, see Singapore’s street style below!!!

Istanbul Shopping

By Elma B.

This summer, I had a chance to visit one of the most beautiful cities in the world: Istanbul. As I browsed around the city, I noticed in the shops and magazines that there was a unique spin to the Turkish urban style. The (vastly) dark haired beauties are a combination of exotic Central Asian and Eastern European looks. Many different nationalities had crossed paths in the Ottoman Empire that essentially gave rise to Mustafa Kemal’s modern Turkey.

From my observation of many stores and fashion magazines, I saw that many of the trendy women like to wear one or two bold colored items or a bold colored dress/suit/pants/blouse. Also, I noticed the popularity of embroider beads on clothing, purses or accessories. I have included some photos of the streetstyle in Istanbul. Overall, I loved the city: one of the most gorgeous places on earth I have visited!!

Here are some chain stores that my friend Zeynep C. graciously provided (in case you are shopping in Istanbul):

She referred these two upscale stores and praised the Vakko bags:

She said this is a cool chain-boutique:

She lauded these very famous bikini and lingerie brands:

She also referred me to this famous Turkish fashion blog:
