From New York to Paris: 2014 Fashion Week Reviews

By Sarah Baker

Unable to attend the New York, London, Milan or Paris fashion weeks? I could not either, but don’t worry, I’ve got us all covered! From Karl Lagerfeld’s unique Chanel show to the hits of all the major brands and chic street style, I’ve got it covered from hats to shoes.

Karl Lagerfeld and Chanel

All the buzz of fashion week seems to be around what Karl Lagerfeld did during the Chanel show. He transformed Paris’s Grand Palais into a supermarket, setting the scene for Chanel’s Fall/Winter 2014 show. Lined with produce and canned goods all adorned with Chanel’s logo, the models shopped as they showed off tweed suits, bright leggings and metallic sneakers, to name a few.

Highlights of Major Brands

1. Valentino: In typical Valentino style, this show was exquisite.  Some of the highlights were calf-length skirts, handkerchief hems, knee-length boots, Little Red Riding Hood capes, crazy coats, skirts’n’sweaters, polo-necks, blanket coats, and sensible handbags.

2. Tom Ford: Tom Ford’s show was fun and proved that he never takes himself completely serious. Shiny black leather cowboy boots, leather jacket, scarlet chubby, pencil skirts, and leopard prints were among the items highlighted.

3. Preen: The style this year was focused on things that we would actually want to wear next season. From elegant long, fit-and-flare skirts, lace blouses, paprika-red peplum blouse and trousers, Preen never disappoints.

4. Victoria Beckham: Focusing on a clean, modern and confident way to dress, diagonal hip-to-shoulder wrapped jackets, longer-line skirts, sensible shoes were the center of this show.

5. Prada: Modeling shearling coats, louche satin dresses, oversized jumpers, this year Prada was inspired by Berlin in their creations.

6. Christian Dior: This collection was made for the real life woman dashing around the city. Adorned in trouser suits, quilter jackets, and dresses, all of high-pigment color pallet, this show made us feel like we could really wear it.

7. Marc by Marc Jacobs: Presented with a tomboy edge, prom dresses and Cossack trousers were the focus.

8. Christopher Kane: Coming up with neon and seat belt straps, PVC shoe-protector details, and tailored overcoats, this collection left us wondering how in the world they came up with it all.

9. JW Anderson: The style this year could be labeled as somewhat experimental. The highlights included earthy tones, twisty necklines, long skirts, and elegant looking jumbo cords.

10. Saint Laurent: The style here this year seemed to be of a rebel youth culture and black-and-white mod look.

11. Dolce & Gabbana: Setting up the runway in Little Red Riding Hood style, hoods, capes, and gorgeous flat shoes were at the center of this collection.

12. Louis Vuitton: Nicolas Ghesquière for Louis Vuitton was inspired by 1960s. The main focus was on midi dresses and skirts that exumed bourgeois French chic.

13. Alexander McQueen: Never failing to astonish, the always edgy McQueen collection was all about paying a rural tribute and focusing on wilderness like leaves and acorns.

14. Stella McCartney: The star of her show? It was none other than the "it" girl Cara Delevingne. She brought the tie-dye back and covered a range of clothes from sporty to evening.

15. Chloé: There was a lot of color, texture, and fringes in the Fall 2014 Chloé collection. The collection was very much in tune with wilderness.

16. Knezo: Its Fall 2014 collection was all about combining prints and sharp cuts. The colors and prints were very conspicuous.

Chic Street Style

One thing to be on the lookout for during the New York, London, Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks is not on the runway, but on the street. Every year, bloggers, editors, and A-listers dress to the nines, and this year did not disappoint. Some of the highlights of this year were graphics and prints from smiley faces, tigers, quotes and band tees to floral, floral, floral. There was a lot of black as well as nudes, whites, and bright colors. As far as accessories go, chunky necklaces, big, bright bags, and shoes were at the center.
