Fashion In the 1960s

By Elma B.

The fashion in the 1960s has by and large been defined by the iconic and timeless beauties of Hollywood: Audrey Hepburn, Brigitte Bardot, Grace Kelley, Raquel Welch, Socia Lauren, Natalie Wood, Marilyn Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor and the first lady Jacqueline ("Jackie") Kennedy Onassis. Fashion in the 1960s became much more liberal, and daring; the colors were bright and the designs bold. Geometric patterns dominated dresses, denim jeans for women became the new norm and mini skirts became widely accepted.

Some of my favorite 1960s fashion icons are Twiggy, Audrey Hepburn and Jacqueline Kennedy. Twiggy, a British supermodel (whose actual name is Leslie Hornby) became an idol for young girls and largely known for her stick-thin figure and boyish haircut. Audrey Hepburn was elegant and her style became synonymous with classic: simple, flat shoes, three-quartered length pants, and plain-unicolor shift dresses. Moreover, her beehive hairdo became copied by women all over the world. Another lady whose style became synonymous with classic was first lady Jacqueline Kennedy; she was beautiful, graceful and elegant. Her 1960s fashion sense popularized pearl necklaces, oversized sunglasses, and simple-big-buttned suits.
