Why Visit Kravice Waterfalls

By Lara Medić

Me
Amongst the most fascinating natural features of the Herzegovinian region (southern Bosnia) are the sparkling-emerald waterfalls of Kravice. The waterfall was created by the Trebižat river with its tuff deposits; now, grass, moss and lichen grow on the tuff deposits giving the water its beautiful emerald look. Kravice waterfalls have been declared a natural phenomenon and are now under state protection.

Waterfalls are about 10 kilometers south of Ljubuški, and 40 kilometers south of Mostar. Its height is between 25 (82 feet) - 28 meters (about 92 feet) and the amazing radius of the lake is 120 meters (394 feet).

Why Kravice Waterfalls?

During the year, the waterfall looks different every time as the water levels of the river Trebižat change. In the summer, the water looks spectacular. Its emerald green color is formed because of the many different stones and trees that surround the whole area. It is a perfect place for taking photos - the ambiance is unique and the views spectacular! I took these photos two days ago, and I must say that I will return in the near future.

The water is crystal-clear (and cold) and falls into a small valley. When the weather gets hot, some of the water particles vaporize in the air and hence give the misty-cooling effect which is relaxing. There is also a lovely boardwalk, which takes you all the way down to the base of the falls.

Kravice waterfalls are a jewel

If you get tired of the sandy beaches this summer, head to Kravice waterfalls, which also have a soft sandy bottom. If you want, you can swim, like me, across the lake (you can notice how the water gets colder the further you swim out), play some water games with your friends, and even climb the rocks and jump. This is what some local teenagers do to impress the girls.

Also, you can sit on a rock with a small waterfall pouring down on your heads – it is soooo cool and very refreshing. Also, there is a great restaurant, where you can enjoy the view and relax by listening to the rumbling noise from the waterfalls.

Where To Eat:

During the summer season, various restaurants in the vicinity of the waterfalls offer popular dishes. My favorite is, typically - grilled meat with some french fries and a good fresh salad. Or you can bring some food and have a little picnic (there is picnic area). Make sure you leave the place like you found it-- clean!

The area has cafe, a rope swing, and a great place to camp. The best time of year for visiting Kravice waterfalls is during the springtime when the waterfall is at its fullest and the arid landscape turns into a bright green color. But you can visit it at any time of the year- it is always open!

Recreational Opportunities:

Above all, the waterfalls are popular in the summer season with rafting enthusiasts and locals. It is the perfect place for all those who wish to relax and enjoy themselves in the midst of an uncontaminated atmosphere, accompanied by the constant sound of waterfalls in the background. Close to them, there is also a small grotto with stalactites made of calcium carbonate, a superb old mill, all to be admired. It is a great place for the whole family (for every age) and your pets.

Finally, one of the coolest thing is that the Trebižat River also offers pleasant canoe trips, organized by local experts, with 10-km river journeys for about 35 Euros per person (which includes a guide, equipment and a canoe). This is an experience not to be missed where the frantic pace of daily life seems to be only a far-away memory. You can really enjoy in this wild, untouched nature of the Kravice Waterfalls.

How to get there?

If you are coming from Croatia: Firstly, go to Metković, then continue towards Mostar and pass the border. Turn left over the river into Čapljina and drive through the town. At the T-junction turn towards Ljubuški and continue for about 15 km. Turn left and follow the road to the very end where you pass a bus parking. And just continue 1 km drive, drop the car (there is a special parking place for Kravice visitors),and be sure to respect the "no parking" signs.

Kravice waterfalls are mainly visited by tourists coming to Međugorje, just fifteen minutes’ drive away from the falls.

  - If you are going from Bosnia: just follow the signs to Mostar, Ljubuški or Čapljina.
