Many of you have seen the well-known Marilyn Monroe painting, where she resembles a cartoon/advertisement and there are several color variations of her portrait, and have then learned that it was hand-painted with paint drips by Andy Warhol. Well who is Andy Warhol?

He was an American artist, who lived from 1928-1987 (died at age 58). Warhol was a leading figure in the visual art moment known as pop art and later was dubbed as the "Pope of Pop." His art depicts a relationship between artistic expression, celebrity culture and advertisement. His first pop paintings were displayed in April 1961 as the backdrop of a window display for the New York Department Store Bronwit Teller. After becoming a celebrated artist in the 1960s, Warhol stripped his subjects down to the icon itself, i.e. a brand name, a celebrity, a dollar signed, and removed any signs of an artist's hand. Overall, Warhol's art is composed of many forms of media, including hand drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, sil screening, scuplutre, film, and music. He founded Interview Magazine and authored several books including, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol and Popism: The Warhol Sixties.
Warhol was openly gay even when the society was not as open-minded as today. He had a studio called The Factory, where distinguished intellectuals, drag queens, playwrights, Bohemian street people, Hollywood celebrities and wealthy patrons gathered. The Factory had three different locations between 1962 and 1984.
Today, there is The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where Warhol was born. The museum has a large and a permanent collection of Warhol's art and archives. The Andy Warhol Museum is the largest museum in the U.S. dedicated to a single artist. Many of his creations are highly valued by art collectors and include some of the most expensive paintings ever sold. In fact, the highest price ever paid for a Warhol painting in the U.S. was $100 million; the 1963 canvas is titled Eight Elvises.
Below you will find some photos of Andy Warhol and his famous art pieces. Which one is your favorite and what do you think about Andy Warhol as an artist? Now, hopefully, you know "Who is Andy Warhol."
