Ever since I was a small child, I was infatuated by the ballerinas painted by Edgar Degas, who was a French artist famous for his impressionist paintings. More than half of his work depict dancers, and he was a mast in depicting movement. I recall my humanities teacher telling our class that in the 1900s, the old men, who stood at silhouettes and bystanders, were the patrons of the young teen ballerinas. The entire class was very disturbed.
Aside from the fascination by Degas with the ballerinas, the fashion world has been fascinated with their elegant costumes and movements. Fashion powerhouses, like Chanel, created ballerina flats for women that wanted to be elegant yet comfortable. In fact, Tory Burch made her career out of her now signature Tory Burch flats. Another aspect of the fashion world that was inspired by ballerinas is the bun. Women all over the world have worn buns either to professional in a work place or to be elegant at the ball. Young teens have mixed the classic buns with grungy and rock clothing. Some in the fashion industry have gone so far as to reproduce a tutu to make it into everyday clothing.
Public's infatuation with ballerinas once again came to light with the Hollywood movie Black Swan starring Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. The film was based on the Tchaivkosvsky's renowned play Swan Lake. The film was a major box office success as it grossed $329 million worldwide. Black Swan was nominated for five Academy Awards and Portman won the Best Actress award. The film received a nomination for Best Picture and its director, Darren Aronofsky, was nominated for Best Director.
Below, I have gathered fashion pieces, photography, paintings and film, which altogether were inspired by ballet and its dancers. Leave a comment below and let me know what you think about ballerinas as a source of inspiration for art.
