Confessions of a Fashionista: The Price of Beauty

By Elma B.

Jane Fonda has been asked how she manages to look so fabulous and beautiful at the age of 75; her consistent answer: a lot of time and a lot of money! When I was 15 years old, I used to look, with enviable eyes, at the models on billboards and magazines; I thought that these girls simply woke-up looking flawlessly and that somehow the rest of the people I knew were just "normal." What I did not realize was that "beauty" required hours of work and lots of professionals involved. For instance, Victoria's Secret supermodel Adriana Lima spent 12 hours when shooting for Vogue Spain in June 2010. In another words, looking "flawless" required a lot of professionals, including make-up artists, hair stylists, photographers, graphic designers, and fashion designers, and a lot of money (to pay for the people on the set). Did I mention the cost of personal trainers and plastic surgeons?

In fact, my make-up in the photos below required around 45 minutes, e.g., toner, primer, bronzer, highlighter, and concealer. On top of the hours spent make-up, I take very good care of my skin on a daily basis: I use Lancome's scrub, toner, face and eye serum, and moisturizer; and I eat food filled with nutrients (e.g., fish and fresh fruits and vegetables). In another words, "beauty" as we see on billboards, magazines and TV requires a lot of dedication, passion, hard work and money.  I advise you not to feel badly about yourself and to think twice before purchasing a product that a "flawless" model is advertising because that image does not exist. It is fantasy meant to sell you a product; the model and her reality could not be farther from the fantasy selling that product. Until next time fashionistas, signing-off from New York City, xoxo.

Top Runway Trends From New York Fashion Week

By Lizbeth Perez

New York Fashion Week is a magical time of the year for not just New Yorkers, but anyone who loves, lives or breathes fashion. Luckily for those of us who happen to feel that way, it is an event that comes not once a year, but twice, lasts several days and includes upwards of over 90 separate designers and shows.

The semi-annual show – which runs a season ahead – ran this year from February 6 through the 13th, with not even dreadful weather or all out snow storms putting a stop to the shows; or its attendees. Yes, while many attendees actually do go to see the clothes, sometimes the fashion on the sidewalk is just as good as on the catwalk.  This was evident with the abundance of glamorous Fashionistas (sans stilettos) who brought enviable street fashion and flair to the streets of New York in full force.

Club Fashionista Attends the Miami International Boat Show

By Lizbeth Perez

While the rest of the United States has been undergoing a very extreme winter consisting mainly of rainy or snowy, cold and all around miserable winter days, I will be the first to admit that here in Miami we have been a tad bit out of touch. Our winter has been extreme yes, but by extreme I mean the weather has been amazingly nice, i.e., it has rarely dipped below 80 degrees fahrenheit (around 26 celsius). This past weekend proved to be no different and along with our picturesque waterways only solidified why our beautiful city is the perfect backdrop for its Progressive Insurance’s famous yearly boat show: The Miami International Boat Show.

Tips From a Professional Stylist: How to Pick a Suit

By Oliver Gerona

Fashion has been my passion since I was 15 years old, and I prefer Italian made suits more so than English because of my shape--I am tall and slim. I love mixing colors, and I am not afraid of it. I never wear black shoes except for funerals or tux shoes except for weddings. I have been working with Domenico Vacca for the past 15 years, and I have dressed most of his VIP A+ and Hollywood clients.

10 Reasons Money Can't Solve Problems

By Sarah Baker

Many people believe that if you have money, you don’t have any problems. This is false. In fact, sometimes having money causes problems you would not have had otherwise. I have complied a list of 10 reasons having money does not mean that a person has no problems.

1. Drug and Alcohol Abuse. More money can mean more access to drugs and alcohol. For instance, we are all aware of Lindsay Lohan's problems with substance abuse, and of those unfortunate enough to succumb to their addictions, like Cory Monteith and Philip Seymour Hoffman.

Dirty Little Secrets of Old Hollywood Stars

By Sarah Baker

We all know that everyone has secrets, no one is perfect. They can be huge like an affair or small like a lie they told, but a secret is a secret and we guard them with our lives. But why? We know everyone has them, we love to hear about other people’s secrets, but we can’t bear to have ours revealed. We all seem to have this do as I say not as I do attitude when it comes to secrets. We don’t want ours to be told, but we can’t wait to hear anyone else’s and gossip about it. This gossip rules our lives and gives us something to talk about when there is a lull in the conversation. We can be very judgmental and cruel when someone else’s secret comes out, but when our own is on the table, the tides quickly turn.

Spring Fashion Trend: the Trench Coat

By Nerina Hodizic Poplata

As freezing weather is no longer an issue yet spring, with all its charms, has not yet arrived, we are faced with a dilemma: what to wear? Coats and faux-fur coats already bore you but the calendar does not allow blazers and waistcoats yet. This season, the fashionistas are clinging on to their trench coats. Let's have a look on the latest styling tips for this weather...

Spring Denim

By Amra B.

For casual days, the most popular go to clothing is: jeans! I wear jeans during all seasons, and they are my most popular choice on days that I want to lay back and relax. Denim goes great with everything, but this spring I choose to pair up my jeans with flats. Flats allow me to move around freely as I tend to walk everywhere that I can. They are also the shoes I end up wearing most often. I bought my shoes below recently, and I have a feeling they will  save my feet this spring. I am also very much into light ripped denim and chunky jewelry. I love how the bold necklaces stand out against the casual denim, and also feel they look equally great with a striped shirt as they would with a simple white tee.

Here are some ideas on how to wear denim this spring:

4 Ways to Leave Your Relationship

By Rachel Burt

You are in the passenger's seat on the way to another fancy dinner date. Everything seems perfect, you are wearing a pretty little black dress and he looks good and smells fresh...except you feel empty. You have nothing to say to one another; so, this makes it the perfect occasion to turn-up the radio and sit in silence for the entire drive.

Arriving at the restaurant, he opens the door for you, and you abruptly walk out. You forget to even say thank you.  As you sit and eat dinner together, you are more focused on how amazing the food tastes, what martini to order, and what is next for desert than on him. You are looking around at all the other tables wondering what others have ordered. As you look up, you notice you did not hear a word he was saying.

"What happened?" you rashly think to yourself.  Then you realize, you are not in love anymore and that is what is happening. This once exciting, interesting and passionate relationship is now nothing but a programmed ritual and a comfort pillow to rest your head at night. What is next? You have to walk away and leave him; if you do not, and you stay because of pity or because of comfort, the apartment you share becomes one of the loneliest places on earth.

When in Maldives: Top 5 Travel Tips

By Rachel Burt

Why is Maldives one of the most exotic places to visit in the world?

Maldives could be considered the number one on the list of the most sought after places to visit on the globe. Fabulous weather year round, this place consists of tiny coral reef islands with a serene atmosphere of turquoise blue water, sparkling golden sands and palm trees on every corner. It is considered one of the most romantic getaways due to its spectacular underworld, secludedness and hospitality. Be prepared to do little but snorkel the beautiful colorful waters, sun bathe and sip delicious cocktails while lounging out on a hammock on your own private roofed bungalow. But what more could you ask for when you need a week of bliss on a deserted island with your loved one.

Maldives beach becomes sea of stars from a certain type of bioluminescent plankton, which emit light when stressed on its sea shores.
Here are some tips on what to do on this magical island...

Trying to Conquer Forbidden Love

By Sarah Baker

There are many cases in which love has been denied to those who have gone after it. Is there a reason for this? Has society, distance, and our own families kept us from our one true love? Is it possible to love someone and be with them, no matter what? Is it actually possible for love to conquer all? Sometimes. Sometimes, it conquers all; and sometimes, it crashes and burns. The decision is all up to you, really, as it was with Romeo and Juliet, Noah and Allie, and for me personally.

San Sebastain Festival in Miami

By Darlene Vazquetelles

One of the best gifts you could give yourself when moving to a different country is to keep your traditions and culture alive.  You add some decorations from back home, hang the flag, paintings, and souvenirs you brought back with you.  You play the music, cook the traditional food, go online to keep up with the news from your country, etc. As a way to stay connected to your roots, you attend local events that represent the traditions and customs of your home country.  One example of a cultural representation away from home is the San Sebastian Festival in Miami!

Me
If you have been reading my posts, you know that I am a proud Puerto Rican. Although many people see Puerto Rico as "Americanized" because of its status of Commonwealth of the United States, the people on the island continue to emphasize loyalty to the culture and folklore that heavily exists on the island. There are hundreds of traditions that define the island of Puerto Rico, and one of them are the numerous festivals we celebrate throughout the year.  One of the most famous festivals is called the San Sebastián Festival (Fiestas de la Calle San Sebastián).

Rain Boots

By Amra B.

This post should be titled "boots for the melting snow" and the idea is that now that the five feet plus of snow is melting, there are ponds (not puddles) of water on the road that I cannot just skip over. Furthermore, rain boots are also an excellent guard against the cold; most rain boots are made from rubber and this material keeps my feet extra toasty.

Ease into Spring

By Amra B.

Spring is coming and I am just eagerly awaiting to shed all my layers of clothing, skip the bulky jackets, and reach for blazers and pretty dresses. With warmer weather on its way, I have also been inspired to incorporate some color into my ensemble; In winter months, I am dedicated to my usual palette of gray, black, and brown. However, new season requires some getting used to: it is wise to start (subtly) adding pops of color here and there. In line with this thinking, I dug up my green/turquoise jacket and matched it with a white tee. I  still kept the rest of my ensemble black, but the colors made me feel refreshed and enthusiastic about the coming warmer months.

10 Most Unbelievable Places in the World

By Lizbeth Perez

They say happiness is a journey; not a destination, and I can’t help but agree.  We live in a world full of wonders and beauty at every turn, which many of us can hope to experience first hand. I am a big believer in traveling, mainly because I really do think it helps shape you not only as a person but humbles you and forces you to look at the big picture; ultimately changing you before you need to make life changing decisions, such as marriage, children, and career paths…

Why Men Pay For Prostitutes

By Lizbeth Perez

Generation WhY…Why Some Men Pay For Sex

Until I began researching this article, I had always been of the mindset that any man who paid for sex was either a pervert or so unattractive or flawed that a prostitute was really the only way he would otherwise be able to get any action. But then I thought, do guys ever really get sex for free? The simple answer is "no"; there's always some price to pay, no matter how big or small.

But I digress.

Style Guide: How to Wear a Jumpsuit

By Amra B.

The jumpsuit became popular in the 1960s and again in the 1980s; since then, the jumpsuit has been reintroduced time and time again by designers like Derek Lam, Proenza Schouler, Anna Sui, and Alexander McQueen. All of the aforementioned designers have been known to showcase jumpsuits many times on catwalks. I love the jumpsuit because of its ability to elongate the figure and give a polished appearance instantaneously. Plus, jumpsuits are so incredibly easy to wear: all you need is a pair of heels and a jacket/blazer. Voila, and you are ready to head out the door while looking absolutely perfect!

Styling tips on how to wear a jumpsuit:

Stick to a solid color when choosing a jumpsuit: solid colors provide a slimming effect and are easy to combine with other pieces.
Add a bright suit jacket/sweater/coat: with spring on its way, adding a bright suit jacket will give you a pop of color and make you instantly season ready.
Choose an appropriate length: make sure to get yours tailored to achieve a perfect fit for your body size and type.

Have a wonderful day!

Outfit dissected: jumpsuit from Forever21, coat from French Connection, purse by Louis Vuitton, boots by Viktor&Rolf, headpiece from Zara, and vintage sunglasses.

What Is Considered Beauty in Different Parts of the World?

By Rachel Burt
Edited by Jessica Miller

I recently saw a documentary called The Human Face, starring Elizabeth Hurley, on BBC about beauty; strangely, when countless of people were asked to define female beauty in a study, no one seemed to have a clear answer. The documentary reveals that most people concurred that symmetry defined beauty but beyond that there was not much agreement.

New Fashion Trend: 1990s Flannel

By Amra B.

One of my favorite trends from the 1990s is the flannel shirt. I remember watching Claire Danes in My So-Called Life and wanting to be just like her by wearing flannel shirts with flower printed dresses while dating Jared Leto, who was my teenage dream.  I still love flannel (and Jared Leto) but now choose to wear it in a more subtle way. I like wearing flannel shirts beneath a suit/jacket (as shown in my photos below) or wrapped around my waist.

Although some women's stores may carry it as well, I find that the easiest way to find flannel is in men's department stores (mine is a vintage find from a men's shop in Madrid, Spain),  Here are some tips on how to wear your flannel:

  • Flannel with jeans: I absolutely adore flannel with ripped jeans (for the total '90s grunge effect, layer a flannel shirt over a gray or a white t-shirt).
  • Flannel on flannel: for the office look, you can add a flannel shirt over a flannel skirt. If you fear that this is too much print, throw over a black or a gray blazer/knit.
  • Flannel scarves: I absolutely adore flannel scarves, and I have recently seen some amazing ones in Zara. They look great paired with a unicolored jacket or a suit
Outfit: coat Ralph Lauren, scarf Club Monaco, jeans Zara, shirt vintage, boots Michael Kors, purse Salvatore Ferragamo, sunglasses Prada, rings Forever21 and vintage

Feel Good Guide: How to Deal With Unrequited Love

By Rachel Burt
Edited by Jessica Miller

Some say “one-sided love is better than none, but just like a fruit, it is likely to mold or grow hard sooner or later." One sided love, or as it is commonly referred to as "unrequited love," is love that is not reciprocated. So, how do we deal with the pain of unrequited love? Sit and let the emotional distress chew us up or move on and blossom? I think the choice is clear: the latter, of course!

Are Celebrities Beautiful or Is It Photoshop?

By Rachel Burt
Edited by Jessica Miller

Countless of women suffer from body image issues after flipping through pages of magazines like Cosmopolitan, Vogue and Harper's Bazaar and seeing what on the surface looks like flawless images of models and celebrities. However, many women, including myself, do not understand the extent that photoshop can alter a human body. Photoshop is capable of giving a person an extreme makeover. In another words, ladies, the images on the advertisements in magazines are not real. The reality of what that celebrity or model looks like on an everyday basis could not be further from the truth.

Don't Forget to Smile

By Elma B.

“Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears.” -John Lennon

Often we are subdued by what is missing from our life rather than focusing on our blessings, e.g., our family and friends. For starters, my focus constantly shifts on what I am missing in life rather than counting my blessings everyday. For instance, I was fortunate to have met some great people while living in London: one of them is Alisa--who I am happy to share has joined the Club Fashionista pack. She is our liaison for London now that I am no longer living there.

Gentlemen's Guide: Where to Pick-Up Women

By Lizbeth Perez

The Truth About Bars Is…

To many men, meeting a woman, regardless of whether they are single or not, is no easy task. In all actuality, to many men, charting a round-trip flight to Venus might be an easier task to accomplish. Even with the push for gender equality and the new re-emergence of the “modern” woman, this task is still remarkably complicated due to the fact that men are still the initiator of the majority of pickups, or at least still like to think that they are…

I know for a fact that I, as a female, am glad of this disparity. I’m sure we can all agree that men are ultimately in the unenviable position of having to face constant rejection.

How to Travel Back in Time

By Rachel Burt

That afternoon she sat in a cafe with a pen in her hand and a paper on the table. She was nervous and kept writing incessantly. As she sipped her freshly brewed coffee, she slipped the letter in the envelope and walked to the post office to drop if off. The letter had to be sent that day: the news was urgent. Later that evening, her date picked her up for dinner. He parked the car and knocked on the door to meet her parents. The family greeted him at the door, and he shook the father's hand and was even invited for a cup of tea; he politely declined.

You must think by now I am talking about a 1960s film...or some old-fashioned novel. Actually, no. I wanted to share with you my escapades in a few small towns in Portugal, where time stands still. It is like jumping into a time-machine and escaping the pollution and the fast paced life of big cities. To get into the spirit, I brought my polaroid camera...here is what I saw:

A Pair of Heels Can Change Your Mood

By Amra B.

London has taught me that there is no excuse for looking/dressing sloppy. Every day, I see people that are eminently chic. Putting your best foot forward is almost mandatory in London, and hardly anyone strays away. The truth is, I have found that dressing up elevates my mood and provides me with a sense of empowerment.
