When In Istanbul Do...

By Elma B.

This summer I visited, along with my family, the charming and the mystic city of Istanbul, which has been the throne to two major empires: the Byzantine/Eastern Roman and the Ottoman empires. The city lies on the Bosphorus Strait, which is on the crossroads between the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea.

Walking along the old part of the city, one will notice the remnants of a Christian empire and an Islamic empire. This contrast comes to light in Hagia Sophia (i.e., Holy Wisdom), where mosaic Christian plasters were covered by Islamic calligraphy. Today Hagia Sophia stands as a museum. Other Ottoman treasures include Dolmabahçe Palace, Topkapı Palace, the Grand Bazaar, etc. At the Grand Bazaar, you will be able to find authetic-hand-made jewelry and Eastern rugs, perfect for your home decor. Another perk to the city is the delicious variety of food, including mouth-watering sweets.

If you would like to experience nightlife in Istanbul, visit the new part of the city called Bebek.  There are several amazing restaurants with a gorgeous view and chic night clubs like Angelique. Please see the photos below for details.
