What Is Burlesque Style?

By Elma B.

American Burlesque was a spinoff off of Victorian Burlesque, which reproduced classical plays (e.g. Shakespeare and Chaucer) by adding a comical spin.  The American style burlesque became increasingly focused on female nudity. The shows were performed in clubs, cabarets, music halls and theaters. Essentially there was a transition from Burlesque old style to striptease.  The dancers and singers at first showed off their figures, and later the aforementioned dancers were displaced by stripteases. There has been a recent revival of burlesque shows in both Europe and the United States.  In the 1960s, Gypsy Rose Lee was a well-known burlesque perform. Today’s very famous burlesque performer includes Dita von Teese. Please see the photos for details.
