Boho Inspired Home Makeover

By Sarah Baker

If you are looking to give your home a makeover, I have a great new trend for you. Boho or Bohemian rooms are the hot new trend in interior design. This style involves mixing a lot of different patterns and colors that you may not think should go together, that’s the point of it. The room should be full of life, culture, and interesting items as well as carefree, relaxed, and unusual.

Colors:

As far as colors go, you can go with pretty much anything except white. Big splashes of white don’t really have a place in a Boho inspired room. Common colors include more warm and earthy colors and metallic such as thick browns, terra cotta, and gold as well as others in that color family. Jewel tones such as saturated purples, fiery oranges, and electric blues are common in accessories such as tapestries and wall art.

Materials:

Common materials used are burlap and sisal. Try mixing them with silk and chenille. Most of the materials that you use should have a slightly worn look.

Furniture:

When looking for furniture, you want to go with stuff that no one else has, things that people won’t be able to look at and know where it’s from. Furniture should be special and tell a story, that’s part of the Bohemian charm. They should be second-hand or vintage, never brand new.

Accessories:

Again, your accessories should tell a story, they don’t have to tell your story, but they should tell the story of the room. They should be collected from all around the world or at least look like they have been. Think off beat but glamorous. Ornate boxes, vintage bottles, maps, tapestries and rugs on the wall, and mismatched China are among some items you could include in your room.

Great places to look for pieces for cheap are flea markets, consignment shops, craigslist, eBay, yard sales, and antique stores. You can also check with family and friends for old pieces they may have stashed away somewhere.

There are very few rules when it comes to creating a Boho inspired living space. In fact, there is really only one, make it tell a story. There are a few things to remember when picking out furniture and accessories: think warm, think unique, and think vintage. Don’t be afraid to mix things up and put things together that normally wouldn’t and make it all your own. Remember, it’s your space and there really are no rules, just make it tell a story and enjoy your new space.
